Dancing Shoes: A Legacy in Motion was a month-long exhibition presented in October at the InterContinental Miami’s Gallery 100 in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month and the centennial of the legendary Queen of Salsa, Celia Cruz. The exhibition was created and curated by the MIAMI Shoe Museum in partnership with The Celia Cruz Foundation and CollaborARTive, and integrated into CollaborARTive’s weekly Noche de Arte program at the InterContinental Miami. We are especially grateful to the Miami DDA for helping local institutions connect and promote culture in our community, enabling initiatives like this to reach broad and diverse audiences.

The exhibition transformed Gallery 100 into a dynamic cultural hub within Downtown Miami’s hospitality corridor. Throughout its run, Dancing Shoes welcomed more than 1,800 attendees, including local residents, students, cultural leaders, families, and numerous national and international tourists. Hosting the exhibition at the InterContinental Miami significantly expanded audience reach beyond traditional museum visitors and strengthened Downtown Miami’s cultural tourism profile.

A central feature of the exhibition was original research conducted by the MIAMI Shoe Museum Research Center on the innovative cantilever-style shoes worn by Celia Cruz. This research examined their structural ingenuity, identified early designers such as Mexican designer Nieto (1960s–1970s), and contextualized the technical advancements within broader footwear history. Presenting this scholarship alongside original pieces worn by Cruz bridged academic research and accessible public storytelling.

The exhibition also showcased the five winning designs from the MIAMI Vibes 2.0: AI Footwear Design Challenge, featuring international designers who reimagined Celia’s iconic cantilever style through AI-assisted innovation. Weekly guided tours, live musical performances, and community conversations sustained engagement throughout the month and encouraged repeat visits.

Sponsored by the Miami Downtown Development Authority and Volaris, with media support from Miami Fashion Week and Brickell Magazine, Dancing Shoes successfully honored Celia Cruz’s legacy while advancing research-driven programming, strengthening institutional partnerships, and reinforcing Downtown Miami as a vibrant center for arts, culture, and community enrichment.
